You’ve Got a Friend in Me
Twenty five years ago I became a mom. When she was born and placed in my arms, I was amazed at her bright eyes staring back at me. Somewhere around me or within me I heard, “protect her”… it was so clear, I can still hear those words reverberating in my soul. I hope I did an okay job - and I don’t think I was overprotective, although she might have a different perspective? I did my best with what I knew. I taught her what I thought was important, as did her dad. And, we even learned, albeit somewhat reluctantly, that her life is hers and not ours to re-live, or form to our dreams and visions. And, as the fates would have it- our baby girl has become quite a lovely young woman and all our concerns about her being able to figure out what to do with her life have been for naught. She was right. She could handle it and she does ask for help when she needs it.
All week I’ve had Randy Newman’s You’ve Got a Friend in Me going through my head. As you may recall, it was a hit song from the movies “Toy Story”, “Toy Story 2” and “Toy Story 3”. Daughter #1 was a big “Toy Story 2” fan, and after she turned two, her godfather got her a Jessie doll. Jessie showed up at our house on March 21, 2001, a date that will forever be known in our house as 52-DA-PURPOSE (or Jessie’s birthday). Jessie’s first words out of the box were, “I’m so lucky to be with you!” Our daughter was intent on making sure Jessie had the life she never got with Emily. They went EVERYWHERE together! Once, this included a burial in the sand at the park near our home, but she was unearthed before bedtime, so all was well. Jessie was sooooo loved that, just like the Velveteen Rabbit, some of her hair has fallen out, her ears have been chewed, her belt was lost and found many times, her clothes are threadbare, she never talks anymore, and after a repair at the doll hospital once a decade or two ago, her head no longer stays on her body very well. But! Jessie went to college, and has been to Europe, and she still has a place of honor ON TOP of the bed (or at least the nightstand).
Angels are around us 24/7, singing You’ve Got a Friend in Me to us! They want to be remembered when we are going to the park, to sleepovers, on our travels across town, across the country, or across the world. If we bury them in the sand for a bit, they would really appreciate it if we would dig them up and bring them home before bedtime. The more we remember them, the brighter their energy will be, even if our hair starts falling out and our clothing/bodies get a little threadbare. In fact, when we start losing our heads, it’s an especially good time to call in our angels.
I think I learned, with my daughter’s articulate help, to “protect her” like an angel: allow her free will, intervene when her life or safety is an issue, honor her independence and power to make her own choices, celebrate her successes, hug her literally or figuratively when she doesn’t succeed the first time, and encourage her as she tries again, rejoice in her 25 years on this earth, and every day from here to eternity.
Angels are with us from before birth to after death and everywhere in between - most of us just are unaware of them during our time on earth. They are asking those of us who know they are here to not leave them unemployed, but to ask them for help and guidance, and don’t be afraid to tell your friends! If your friends don’t know angels are real, they’ll just think you’re a little quirky. That’s okay. Angels never abandon us. They just won’t intervene unless it’s absolutely necessary…or unless we ask. We have a friend in angels. Let’s love them and include them in our lives like my daughter’s Jessie, or the Velveteen Rabbit. We won’t be sorry we did.
Peace and Love,
Margaret Rose
