This Little Light of Mine
The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind in my life and the angels have been persistent in their messaging. This is good. I need it when sailing is smooth. When life becomes a hurricane of activity, it’s best if they speak to me loudly, slow-ly, and deliberately so I know when and where to focus.
The message that has been coming through LOUD AND CLEAR is to remind us all of our inner light. Not a single one of us is here on this earth by mistake. We are here to shine brightly and light the way for change. The last decade or so has been so divisive, but change is here.
I turned 55 this week. In numerology fives represent change. And, for about five decades, give or take, I have been dimming my light. If you have been dimming yours, I invite you to join me in cutting that nonsense out. My favorite Sunday School Teacher, Nancy Klaus, taught us a song when I was about four years old and I think it can help us now. “This little light of mine; I’m gonna let it shine, This little light of mine; I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine; I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
Of course, it’s much easier to let our light shine at age four than it is as an adult. We have been conditioned over and over that we are not enough. We are not worthy. We are not safe to be who our spirit cries out to be. The first step in overcoming these oppressive feelings within us is to acknowledge that we are made of Divine Light.
Once we acknowledge that we are made of Divine/God/Love Light, we are asked to love and respect that light within us. I always wondered about that bible passage where Jesus told his followers to “love others as you love yourself”. Self-deprecating humor is the most widely accepted form of humor, and yet where is the love in that? We berate ourselves and call ourselves names. We abuse our bodies with sugar, chemicals, caffeine, alcohol, and drugs searching for that “high”, when what we are searching for is a “higher vibration”. Loving ourselves is treating ourselves with respect: believing our gut feelings, and listening to the voice in our head that tells us when something is a good idea or when it’s a bad idea, and honoring that over what anyone else says. It’s taking the risk to be what we want to be, to do what we want to do, to go the direction of our dreams without worrying what anyone else thinks.
When we truly love ourselves and the light within us, we will begin to see the light in those around us. When we see the light in others, we begin to bridge the divide. We can heal these divisions, but it begins with seeing the light and honoring the light within ourselves.
There is a poem written by Max Ehrmann in 1927 called “Desiderata” which seems appropriate to share here. It’s good advice for all of us on how to help love the light that’s within us and to shine brightly:
Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
And remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
Be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
And listen to others,
Even the dull and the ignorant:
They too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
They are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
You may become vain or bitter,
For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble:
It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of the time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs
For the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
Many persons strive for high ideals,
And everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all the aridity and disenchantment
It is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly to the counsel of years,
Gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
Be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
No less than the trees and the stars;
You have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God
Whatever you conceive him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
In the noisy confusion of life,
Keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
It is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
Peace and Light,
